IPfire seems to be the Linux based system that is holding its own next to the other two BSD based systems. Over the years I personally have not identified any open source offerings that compete with these three.

In older versions of pfSense software, it was the only option available. It has a hierarchy of queues and is capable of real-time traffic guarantees. It can be very effective for VoIP on links that degrade quickly, such as 3G/4G, but it can be complex to configure and tweak for proper operation. OpenBSD belongs to "Operating Systems" category of the tech stack, while pfSense can be primarily classified under "Security".

They are commonly preferred for certain common features such as allowing the administrator to set up, separate and control various subnets that are powered by different routers but still lie within the same information system. Over the years I personally have not identified any open source offerings that compete with these three. pfsense/netgate devices are kind of pricey for some, the nice thing is I can install on pfsense on whatever hardware I want (though I suggest you stay away from realtek network cards) I have the edgerouter and pfsense at two locations. Edge router 2.x firmware has been a hilarious ride to watch over the last few months.
